Distinguished leaders of the shipping industry come together to unveil Maritime Awareness Program Society (MAPS), formed with the objective of spreading maritime awareness amongst the common masses

Mumbai, February 21, 2014: Efthymios Mitropoulos, famously said “without shipping half the world would freeze and the other half will starve to death” thus highlighting the importance of shipping. 90% of trade is carried by ships; this means the clothes that you wear, the petrol in your car and the food on your plate have all been transported at some point by the maritime sector. Thus shipping is the silent contributor touching our everyday lives in many different ways. The common man has a limited perception or appreciation of its influence and role as an essential element in terms of our country’s overall development.

To touch on these very elements and focus on the rich and diverse heritage of the maritime industry, Maritime Awareness Program Society (MAPS) a non-profit society was launched today. The esteemed members of MAPS will work towards the realisation of due credit, to shipping, for its role in the existence of mankind and contribution to the global economy.

With this noble objective of “Maritime Awareness” MAPS brings to you its first ever initiative Maritime Summit 2014. It is to be held at the Oxford Golf Course, & JW Marriott as hospitality partner; in Pune on 22nd February 2014.The energy major ONGC has come ahead and recognised this initiative as the title sponsor. This initiative is powered by IOC and DG Shipping along with Indian Ports Association duly supports this step. ADANI Group, All cargo, INDEV, Petronet LNG, Selandia Group extend this support as associate sponsors.

The MAPS steering members consists of shipping luminaries and is chaired by Mr. Sabyasachi Hajara, Ex Chairman Of SCI, & on the Board of Directors at Doehle Danautic India Pvt. Ltd. Shipping is the major contributor to globalisation and the second line of defence for India. With a gross tonnage of less than 1% of the world, India contributes 6 – 7% of the seafarers, to the global fleet. Shipping brings in 80% of crude into India without which Indian households would go without power. But for shipping with the present level of world economy and international trade, the planet earth would be uninhabitable by humanity in a matter of weeks.
One of shipping’s biggest contributions is the tremendous boost it has given to world trade by bringing down the cost of shipping. For instance, the freight for a pair of shoe’s getting manufactured

in China and getting sold in USA for 250 dollars, may be barely a few cents. Thus it is a cost effective means of transport. Additionally shipping is also the greenest modes of transport. Shipping consumes only 45% energy and in terms of air emission only 40% that of rail transport, 15% that of road transport and well below 1% of that of aviation.

Awareness about maritime industry its underlying transportation system and new trends in leveraging the most cost effective medium of transportation, has to be the top most priority for not only private enterprises but also for public entities and government policy makers. Our country needs new minds to contribute to study, research & innovate on this sector.

Dedicated forums are the need of the hour to spearhead this charter and collaborate with industry experts, veterans and commercial organisations to create awareness on the medium. Dedicated study courses in educational institutions, skills and knowledge development programs and books on the maritime industry need to be introduced in our educational curriculum so that younger generations are made aware of its importance as well as pursue this as their career choice. This awareness is will lay the foundation for making maritime industry key to India’s growth and rise as a global economic power hub.

On unveiling of the society, Mr. Sabyasachi Hajara, Ex CMD of the Shipping Corporation of India, Board of Directors at Doehle Danautic India Pvt. Ltd. (DDI) & Chairman of MAPS commented “The shipping industry has tremendous untapped potential and through this event our industry will receive the right exposure and public awareness. Shipping is still passing through a difficult phase. However since both world economy and international trade are expected to register higher growth in 2014 v/s a v/s last couple of years we expect the fortunes of shipping would also be better in 2014.

The shipping markets are expected to be significantly better from 2015 onwards.”

On this occasion Mr Sudhir Vasudeva, CMD, ONGC commented “Upstream oil & gas industry is rapidly expanding towards the deeper sea, not only in India but globally. With this, the demand for shipping equipped with advanced technologies as well as trained manpower to provide services in challenging circumstances of high seas is also rising in tandem. Enhancing awareness among the shipping industry as well as investors about such upcoming areas by Maritime Awareness Programme Society (MAPS) will go a long way towards energy security of the country.”  

On this occasion Mr. R.S. Butola, Chairman, IndianOil also mentioned “Shipping services play an important part in IndianOil values chain. Shipping is the most economical and carbon-efficient way of transporting goods. It serves more than 95 per cent of global trade by carrying large quantities of cargo; cost effectively, cleanly and safely. These facts may not be known to many as the same is not widely publicized. Maritime Awareness Programme Society (MAPS) will do yeoman service in projecting the right image of Maritime Industry, address important issues of shipping and its role in global economy and environment.”

MAPS wish to highlight the evolving and dynamic maritime sector in the best manner going forward. MAPS plans to make this an international body and during the Maritime Summit 2014, MAPS will endeavour to introduce the book “An Introduction to Maritime Industry- Focus on India" into school curriculum. MAPS aims to work collectively so that more individuals and companies can be exposed to the positive aspects and derive benefits from this industry.

Shipping as a revenue generator for the economy


Indian shipping sector plays an important role in India’s economy. In fact, transport, trade and economic development are mutually supportive. The overwhelming share of shipping in the carriage is about 95 per cent in terms of volume and almost two thirds of the total value of international trade. This establishes its predominance and importance as an international mode of transport.
The importance of shipping, over the period, has also increased due to the technological developments in transport. Especially since the advent of containerization culminating in multimodal transportation, majority of the containers move by this mode of transport.
India’s national flagships provide an essential means of transport for the import of crude oil, petroleum products, coal and fertilisers, export of iron ore and exports and imports of various general (liner) cargoes. National shipping also provides for a second line of defence in times of emergency – merchant ships help in transporting supplies, men and material for the navy. Indian shipping makes significant contributions to the foreign exchange earnings of the country as well.
Thus we can see the vital role played by shipping industry in expanding the growth of overseas trade, and is also a direct earner and saver of foreign exchange. Shipping is a valuable invisible export or foreign exchange earner for any country. Without shipping the import and export of goods on the scale necessary for the modern world would not be possible.
Recognising the role of the shipping industry in the context of overall growth strategy, in general, and the promotion of trade and foreign exchange earnings, in particular, the Indian government has made several amendments to the Merchant Shipping Act to encourage the modernisation and diversification of this industry.
Since the 1990s, the government has simplified the regulatory procedures for raising resources from commercial markets and external borrowing in order to facilitate the acquisition of new and second hand vessels at competitive prices. The shipping companies are now allowed to retain sales proceeds of their ships abroad and utilise them for fresh acquisition.
Government approval is no longer required for raising foreign exchange loans from abroad by mortgaging the vessels with the lender. The government has also granted automatic approval for foreign direct investment up to a limit of 74 per cent and non-resident Indians (NRIs) are permitted to invest up to 100 per cent with full repatriation benefits. While challenges exist, with proper regulation India’s potential as an international maritime service provider can be exploited.

The shipping sector is so global in nature that it will continue to be a foreign exchange revenue generator in the years to come.

Shipping-The Bigger Picture


The Yin and Yang philosophy of the Chinese culture indicates that the pros and cons of a certain situation or opportunity are always equal in their own respective magnitudes and effects. The World chose to believe in this ancient philosophy. But the Maritime industry proves that this concept doesn’t apply in every field, at least not in the Maritime field.
If we have a deep look at the pros and cons offered by Maritime sector, you will surely notice that the pros exceed the cons. Shipping has long been the major form of transport, as well as an essential communication link connecting coastal cities, countries and continents. With more than 200 job opportunities, varying from commandeering a ship offshore to managing an entire fleet of ships onshore, the prospects are endless in this field.
Shipping doesn’t purely mean sailing. With about 60,000 ships on the ocean right now, you’ve got to have a certain group of people handling all of the work behind the scenes- the onshore crews. Thus, those not wanting to be at sea are also welcome to be a part of this maritime industry.
The maritime industry is also considered to be one of the most eco-friendly as well as cheapest modes of transport. With the seas and oceans naturally available and no maintenance required for them, it surely proves to be a boon to the industry. Sending a container from Shanghai to Le Havre (France) emits fewer greenhouse gases than the truck that takes the container further on to Lyon, which is in France itself. This fact totally justifies that the maritime services are truly eco-friendly.
Well, all said about the environmental aspects, what good does the Maritime industry do to a national economy?
Going on to the fact of Maritime services being cost saving, here’s another fact to prove it. It's less expensive to ship Scottish cod 10,000 miles away to China to be filleted and then sent back to Scotland than it is to pay Scottish personnel to do the job. Of course, this reflects mostly on the cheapness of Chinese labor, but it also shows the low costs of shipping products. In a recent study, it has been depicted that the shipping industry contributes 2% of the entire Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to the economy of the United Kingdom (UK).
Even after reading all this, the common man is bound to ask,” What good does the Maritime Industry do to me? “
The only fitting reply is that 90% of all the things you buy at the supermarkets and shopping stores arrive via waterways. Those fast food joints that teens throng to, get all their supplies through shipping containers. Let the shipping industry just disappear for a day and watch the havoc it creates.
The maritime industry thus forms the backbone of a country. With the aviation rules stating that anything flammable cannot be allowed on flight, transport of petroleum and its by-products has to take place through the maritime industry.
Ever had a confused face when a seafarer says that, at times, he brings light and energy to a city or township? So what’s this person talking about?
Ships carry coal, natural gas, petroleum, oil, etc that are used to generate electricity and supply power.

So, let me ask you to put on your thinking caps and have a look at the bigger picture about the Maritime Industry. Soak yourself in the advantages of this field and be a part of one of the largest industries of the world.

Green Shipping

Environmental sustainability has become a central issue in the transportation and logistics sector. Unprecedented 21st century globalization has elicited a growing concern for a greener planet. With growing merchandise trade, shipping is a mode of transport which has proven to be ecologically sustainable and safe with minimal damage to resources, natural or man made.
Maritime shipping is an environmentally friendly and efficient mode of transport. In comparison to land and air traffic, it produces fewer emissions in terms of the load and distance transported, and is substantially more energy-efficient.
Shipping is also the safest mode of transport protecting human, environment and animal life due to strict maritime laws enforceable through International Maritime Organization, (IMO). Chemical pollution, garbage and sewage dumping are all governed by international regulations put into place by the IMO. Prevention of Marine Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) is an important regulation that covers these areas.
Thus shipping can maintain its reputation of being an Eco friendly mode of transportation. Maritime transportation accounts for 90% of cross-border world trade as measured by volume. The nature of water transport and its economies of scale make it the most energy efficient mode since it uses only 7% of all the energy consumed by transport activities, a figure way below its contribution to the mobility of goods.Thus being energy efficient results in shipping having less green house gas and carbon pollution.
The shipping industry worldwide takes pollution prevention seriously. In the case of oil pollution which is a major issue, the IMO has introduced measures that help ensure that the majority of oil tankers are safely built and operated. Care is taken to see that the tankers are constructed to reduce the amount of oil spilled in the event of an accident. In fact Oil spill frequencies and its resulting hazardous impact on the water ecosystems have decreased significantly over the past 20 years, particularly in the last few years, despite overall increases in oil movement
The shipping industry is committed to sustainability and is on a constant watch to include best practices in order to make shipping greener. Green Shipping practices are being adopted in every aspect of the Industry.
Adhering to Corporate Social Responsibility and Client demands, several shipping freight and service-based companies have undertaken greener solutions to maritime trade. Many vessels now use LNG instead of diesel to reduce air emissions; moreover automated engines have been employed in place of manual ones to optimize fuel efficiency. FED-EX and USPR are two such shipping container lines that use alternative fuel fleets to increase fuel productivity.

Ships are now being painted with biocide free paint and hydro-gel coating which not only keeps pollutants out of the sea but also reduces Carbon di oxide emissions, as the paint lessens resistance and saves fuel. Hence, priority for aquatic life is now on a practical agenda. (4)All this and more just goes to show that Shipping as an industry cares for the sector it works in and is focused on a greener future.

Meet the power carrier who drives the Economy.



The world is shrinking, with the remarkable expansion in the maritime industry. From a leisure cruise trip to a business enterprise the maritime industry is one of the fastest growing businesses. Maritime is considered to be the backbone of any country’s development.  In India, or rather the world as a whole, approximately, 90 per cent of the country's trade by volume (70 per cent in terms of value) is moved by sea. As we all know, Trade and development are closely interlinked. Without development, there is no trade and without trade, there isn’t any development either. So basically, the entire existence of development depends on the shipping or maritime industry, indirectly, of course. As per the World Trade Organisation (WTO) projection, the shipping volumes may experience an escalation to 4.5% in 2014.
Think of the GUCCI bag or the PRADA shoes which got everybody’s eyeballs rolling at the party last night or even a casual shirt or jeans that you're wearing for your date last weekend. Ever wondered how did it get to the store where you purchased it from ? Ever wondered how did those AUDIS and the British manufactured BENTLEY managed to kiss the Indian roads? Ever thought where your food at the KFC'c or the  McD's comes from? That’s the irony with all of the commoners, for whom ignorance is bliss, but certainly not anymore. That’s practically the main reason the shipping industry is mainly misunderstood. No one ever tends to even think about it. Shipping is the Invisible Industry That Puts Clothes on Your Back, Gas in Your Car, and Food on Your Plate.
Today almost no nation is fully self-sufficient. In order to grow and prosper every country’s needs to sell what it produces and acquire what it lacks. None can depend on domestic resources alone. Ships have always provided the only really cost-effective method of bulk transport over any great distance. There are more than 45,000 merchant ships trading internationally today, transporting every kind of cargo. The world fleet is registered in over 150 nations, and manned by over one and a quarter million seafarers of virtually every nationality. Without shipping, the world would have extinguished because grains would not be distributed from the points of origin to the points of consumption. Even after having such a profound effect on the world, it is still chosen to be ignored or rather treated as a non-existent mode of transport.
With the introduction of the container in the mid 1960’s, global trade grew two times faster than that of the production rates, and two and a half times faster than global economic output.  Recently, two independent sources looked at the economic contribution of the liner shipping industry and concluded that it is indeed a global economic engine for two reasons: the significant amount the industry contributes directly to the global economy, and the role of the industry as a facilitator of economic growth for other industries.
So how much stuff can a ship actually carry? With the largest container ship being about five times the size of the biggest Plane ever made in the history of mankind, I don’t think I need to say anything more. With a huge capacity to transport shipments and with a cost productive element adding to it, shipping surely is a profitable decision to make. At the very same time, shipping also provides job opportunities and employment for the millions.
With all these facts and figures and advantages of containerization, calling the shipping industry a driver of the world economy isn’t a justified statement. We would rather call it the entire economy itself.
